The conservation of forest biodiversity and endangered species is strictly guided through forest legislation and instructions on forest management. Voluntary forest certification helps to enhance forest management to meet even stricter standards than those required by law.
Metsäliitto organises regular training on environmental issues and new developments in forest legislation and forest certification. Target groups include both Metsäliitto’s own employees and entrepreneurs responsible for wood harvesting and transportation.
Finland represents the top of wood harvesting technology. Modern harvesters are equipped with GIS (Geographic Information System) maps, indicating the exact location of protected sites, for example. This enables the machine conductor to identify them even in wintertime when light is scarce and the forest is covered with snow. Modern harvesting machines have also been designed so that they damage the forest nature as little as possible.
