Carbon footprint Pioneer in carbon footprint calculating

Metsäliitto Group has pioneered the introduction of product-specific carbon footprints, indicating the sources of CO2 emissions in the value chain of wood-based products from the forest to the customer. A carbon footprint describes how a single product affects the climate by indicating the level of carbon dioxide emissions per product unit.

The carbon footprint is a tool helping us to understand the origin of carbon dioxide emissions in the manufacture of wood products, including wood transportation from the forest to the production unit and the transportation of ready-made products to the customer. Metsäliitto introduced its product-specific carbon footprints in 2007.

Our carbon footprint calculations cover carbon dioxide emissions arising during the manufacturing phase and the transportation of both raw materials and ready-made products. The calculations are delivered to customers upon request, because the work can only be finalised once the destination is known.

As there is no uniform standard for carbon footprint calculations available in the forest industry, the calculations adhere to the Carbon Footprint Framework for Paper and Board Products developed by the Confederation of European Paper Industries (CEPI).
